Bauhaus in Manila

The pioneers of the Bauhaus School, Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer taught in Harvard after they reassembled in America when their Bauhaus school in Germany was dissolved. During that time, Angel Nakpil, one of the first architects in the country, studied in Harvard and became exposed with the Bauhaus Architecture. He then transplanted it in some of his designs. The National Press Club is one of his works.

Andres Luna designed many buildings that luckily survived until this day. But his most daring work, the crystal arcade didn’t make it to the modern world. Crystal Arcade made it in Philippine History by becoming the very first air-conditioned Department Store in the Philippines and the first home of the Stock Exchange. Also, when it was built, it is was the most modern building in Escolta. Had it survived until this day, it might have served as the prototype design of our department stores, not the shoe box buildings we all have today.

The church was rebuilt by Architect Dominic Galicia, preserving the concrete structure that survived the fire while adding a soaring roof that increased the height from six meters to 28 meters.
